Software developers and entrepreneurs David Baszucki and Erik Cassel founded the company in 2006. They aimed to build an online universe where players could connect both socially and creatively. Roblox has been credited with popularizing the concept of the “metaverse,” as many of its games involve having players interact in virtual worlds.

Roblox cofounder and CEO David Baszucki presents at the Roblox Developers Conference, 2019Baszucki intended for Roblox to enable players to connect and be creative together.(more)Because Roblox is a global system, games are available in multiple languages, including English, French, Korean, and Chinese. The games are generally geared toward individuals who are 18 years old and under, though as of 2023, almost 20 percent of users were older than 25. Roblox uses several monitoring systems to ensure that children are safe while using the product. These include filters to remove inappropriate language and to make sure that all avatars (game characters) are fully clothed. The system also allows parents to set controls over their children’s account spending, games, and extra features. Despite such safeguards, there have been cases where inappropriate content has evaded filters, as well as instances of online predation.

Players can play Roblox games on various platforms, including smartphones, computers, and electronic game consoles, such as the Xbox One. Games on the platform are typically referred to as “experiences.” Experiences with building themes, such as creating an amusement park or a dream home, are popular. Other experiences include murder mysteries, survival scenarios, and competitions, such as race car driving. Most games allow players to chat with one another in real time, as well as to spend virtual currency called Robux.

ControversyIn August 2023 Roblox was sued by two irate parents who claimed that the platform had led to their children gambling online using Robux. As Robux do have real-world monetary value, this led to the children losing actual money.

Roblox also has coding tutorials that help individuals create their own games. Roblox developers can earn Robux based on the popularity of their games, and players can buy Robux to spend on in-game upgrades and accessories. Some users have monetized their coding skills to create unique gaming experiences. Alex Balfanz, a 2021 Duke graduate, made one of Roblox’s most popular games, Jailbreak, when he was in high school. The game was so successful that Balfanz earned enough to pay for his college tuition in just a few months.
