Raisi, one of the few figures trusted by both the security establishment and the regime’s clerical guardians, was expected to oversee the transition to a new supreme leader after the death of the aging Ali Khamenei (and perhaps become supreme leader himself), and so Raisi’s death has thrown a wild card into Iran’s future.
